A smartphone app that replaces interpretation equipment needs to have:

REQUIRED

• rooms, where people who speak the same language can join
• default setting when you join is MUTED

IDEAL

• the ability to connect with the phone in airplane mode and no internet access

OPTIONAL - these features move the functionality away from standard interpretation (where people are just listening) to a more interactive experience

Since interpretation equipment can be expensive, and expensive to scale, we have been considering whether smart phones can serve as equipment.

It was pretty surprising how many different options exist to implement this.
